“D-8 is a unique forum for economic development” |

Dhaka- (UNB) – Dhaka called for making the new bloc an effective platform for facilitating trade and commerce between its member-nations and rest of the world. As business communities of D-8 countries got integrated with the cooperation process, Foreign Minister Abdus Samad Azad made the suggestion opening meeting of the D-8 Council of Ministers in Cairo Saturday, a day before the Summit of the forum. “D-8 is a unique forum for economic development which holds promise of a better and more prosperous future for the peoples of the member countries,” he told the ministerial meeting of the trade bloc. Foreign Ministers of Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria and Pakistan attended the meeting while Egyptian Foreign Minister Amre Moussa presided after taking the charge from Samad Azad. Stressing internal trade among D-8 nations, the Bangladesh Foreign Minister said: It is trade, not aid, that is the panacea for the economic uplift of the member-countries. Azad welcomed the holding of First D-8 Forum for Chambers of Commerce and Industry and called upon the private sector to join hands with the governments to advance the cause of D-8. The business meeting was held at the same venue February 22-23 and attended by representatives of Chambers of Commerce and business associations from the D-8 member countries. The meeting made some useful recommendations for the promotion and expansion of trade within D-8 group after holding interactive dialogue among the attending business communities. |
